Enrollment to the Masters

So on November 4th I received an email from University #1 notifying that the enrollment process for 2017-2019 had started. They sent us the link for the new students website and our ID and passwords.

Today I sent the requested documents: a commitment letter, a personal information document and a request for the exemption of the registration fee.

Since I have not yet been awarded the MEXT scholarship, I asked them if I had to start the enrollment process and they said yes. That they would soon also send information for dormitories, the Certificate of Eligibility for the visa and ask for some other documents, and that I had to do all that as if I were 100% sure I was going to Japan. They explained that they have all the dates for certain processes already scheduled, and it would complicate things if I do them after their planned dates.

So… scholarship or no, I’m enrolled into the Masters *_____*

  1. Hi Sofi! Thank you so much for this blog, it’s incredibly helpful! By any chance, was this university Kyoto University? I’m currently in the midst of applying and am so confused! We have to apply to the university as well as to MEXT? If you don’t mind could you explain in more detail?

I received an LOA back in September and thought that was it and I was good to go, then I see that there’s a November deadline to apply to the school itself. But since MEXT chooses where we go, don’t we have to wait for them to make a decision? I’d really appreciate any help you could give on this!

    Thank you!

    • Congratulations on passing the interviews! ๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‰
Yes, I was referring to Kyoto University when I wrote my post back then.
What graduate school are you applying to? ๐Ÿ™‚

If you are going as a Research Student I don’t think you need to apply to the school, but you will need to apply to the dorms.
If you are skipping the Research Student phase like me, then you need to apply as soon as possible.

But please contact the admissions department of your graduate school. Kyoto University has been changing a lot in the last few years and their processes were renewed.
Don’t worry about the application fee, you can fill in and exemption format for MEXT scholars. If you get placed there, you don’t need to pay. If you dont get placed there, you don’t need to pay ๐Ÿ™‚

      Again, congratulations!

      • Hi Sofi! Thanks for such a fast reply! ๐Ÿ˜† I’m still a little bit confused though: I was planning on doing the research student phase, so it sounds like I don’t need to complete this application? Just wait for MEXT’s decision in January? The school hasn’t been very communicative so it’s been a bit overwhelming and confusing.

You ended up going to Kyoto University, right? If it’s not asking too much, could I email some questions about your time there (I saw in another post that you lived in an apartment near campus–it’d be great to have the info for that landlady if you still have it ๐Ÿ˜)? I know there’s no guarantee I’ll end up there, but it’d be nice to know just in case ๐Ÿ˜‹

        Thank you again!~
